Private Karaoke Rooms, Lounge
and Mobile DJs in Sarasota, Florida

Private Karaoke Rooms (or Karaoke Box) first became popular in Japan in the 1980s. The first Karaoke Box was actually made from a shipping container. There are now thousands of karaoke rooms all over Japan.

Kroaky's was started by Mark and Mary Devlin in November 2008. Kroaky's is the only dedicated karaoke club in Florida and one of only a handful of private room karaoke clubs in the United States.

Before coming to Sarasota to live, Mark & Mary lived in Japan for 18 years, where they founded Metropolis, Japan's No 1 English magazine - a full color, glossy, 80 page weekly city, entertainment and living guide for English speakers in Tokyo.

In 2000 they started JapanToday, which became the world's largest news and discussion site about Japan in English, and is one of the world's top news websites.

After moving to Sarasota in December 2007 the realized one of the things they missed most about Japan life was private karaoke rooms, so with the help of a funky green Florida frog called Kroaky, they decided to start their own Karaoke pad, and Kroaky's was born.

Sarasota Herald Tribune December 18, 2008 by Abby Weingarten

 Karaoke among friends

Not everyone can swagger up to a bar mike, belt their best rendition of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" and claim karaoke superstardom. Some of us need a little nudge. Take Mary Devlin. The Scot, who lived in Japan for 18 years with her husband, Mark, learned the ropes in the Asian circuit. There, "private room karaoke" was the thing.

Gather a team of friends, and sing your lungs out. No arbitrating audiences. No shame.

The format: Gather a team of friends, reserve a soundproof space and sing your lungs out. No arbitrating audiences. No shame. "In Tokyo, every street corner would have four different karaoke places competing with each other," Mary Devlin said. "It's a huge industry over there."

The Devlins capitalized on this concept by opening Kroaky's Karaoke on Nov. 28, bringing the Eastern style to Southwest Florida. The business has 10 vibrantly colored rooms that seat 4 to 30 people and has a melody database with 17,000 songs (from Top 40 and show tunes to Christian and country).

Rooms cost $4 per person per hour and include cozy seating, disco lights, wireless microphones, songbooks, wigs, maracas and tambourines. Staff even bring beer, champagne, wine, cocktails, pizza and finger foods to the door. "It's a great stress reliever," Mary Devlin said, "especially for the people who are too shy to stand up in a front of a bunch of strangers."

The idea has already caught on in Los Angeles and New York City. In the latter, Korea Town is rife with bars and clubs specializing in the pastime. When the Devlins relocated to Sarasota, after reading an issue of Money Magazine that named it one of the top places to live in America, they could sense that the market was ripe. The couple ran the No. 1 English magazine "Metropolis" and the No. 1 English news site "Japan Today" in Japan, so they already knew a thing or two about pioneering.

"We're trying to Americanize the karaoke concept, so we'd love to see a Kroaky's on every corner," Mary Devlin said. "We're used to doing things people haven't done before, and we have a good feeling about this one.

PRESS & VIDEO

New Sarasota karaoke spot offers private setting

Every time I think of karaoke, I go back to the scene from the 1997 film “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” You know the one where Cameron Diaz’s character gets duped into singing a horrible rendition of “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself” in a crowded bar. The plan was for her to look bad in front of her gorgeous fiance. People yell insults at her as she sings but then — only in Hollywood — the whole bar joins in the song.

Some people I know won’t do karaoke for that very reason. They are afraid the experience won’t end with a Hollywood moment, but with them as a laughing stock. Who wants to be branded as the person who couldn’t even hold a tune through Styx’s “Mr. Roboto.” But there’s hope with Kroaky’s Karaoke — Sarasota’s first private karaoke room establishment. There, groups of two to 70 people can gather in one of nine stylish rooms for a personal karaoke extravaganza like no other. It’s kind of like singing in someone’s living room with hundreds of songs to choose from. I’ve done plenty of living room karaoke — Nintendo Xbox style. But this is a little different and much more posh.

Kroaky’s is a nod to the Japanese take on karaoke. Owners Mark and Mary Devlin lived in Tokyo for 18 years, experiencing the private karaoke room phenomenon. Karaoke, which means empty orchestra, was developed in Kobe, Japan, in the 1970s, according to karaokekanta.net. By the 1980s, the concept spread around the world.

If ‘Star Trek’ had a karaoke, this is what it would look like.

Being a part of the action is better than watching it, so to speak. “I think basically people like to sing,” said Mark Devlin, a former publisher who hails from Scotland. “People like to entertain outside of the home.” Given its popularity overseas and the fact that there hasn’t been anything similar in Sarasota, the Devlins decided to give private karaoke rooms here a try. Their business has been open since November.

Kroaky’s has attracted everyone from students to retirees. Weekends are the busiest times. During the week, there’s a ladies night and a kids night. On a recent Saturday night, 23-year-old Vera Savany, of Sarasota, came to Kroaky’s for a special family outing. It was her second visit there. Surrounded by parents, friends, aunts and uncles, she belted out a soothing rendition of Journey’s “Faithfully.”

Savany loves to sing so much that she once tried out for “American Idol.” She wasn’t picked for the show. Savany said she wasn’t sure what to expect when she arrived with her boyfriend to find hallways full of private rooms and disco lights.“If ‘Star Trek’ had a karaoke, this is what it would look like,” she joked. Savany enjoys Kroaky’s over other traditional karaoke places in the area, because she doesn’t have to wait an hour to sing. Instead, she can sing as much as she likes in her own private room, which houses a quality sound system.“It’s better than most karaoke places,” said Savany, who prefers singing songs by Journey and Prince. “Anybody can sound good.”
Devlin said he has plans to add a Rock Band night, too. Rock Band is a video/karaoke game that lets players perform in a virtual band. It involves a guitar, bass, drums and a lead singer. If Kroaky’s becomes a success in Sarasota, Devlin said he’ll definitely open up another one in Bradenton.

It’s just you, your friends, your favorite songs and two microphones.

Since weekends can be Kroaky’s busiest times, it is recommended that guests reserve a room in advance. Anyone can afford an evening out at Kroaky’s. You’d be surprise how an hour turns into two and two turns into three.  Rooms are filled with comfy couches, a couple of tables, colorful walls and disco lights that may bring out your inner dancer. I recently went with a group of friends, so I can vouch for the dancing.

Being in one of Kroaky’s rooms is like being out of reality. It’s just you, your friends, your favorite songs and two microphones. Plus food. Food and drinks can be ordered from a menu. If you decide to eat later or if you want another round of pizza, mozzarella sticks or other items, you can pick up the phone on the wall and place an order. Believe it or not, singing works up an appetite.
Kroaky’s has hundreds of songs from which to choose. You’ll find everything from Frank Sinatra to Rihanna. There’s top 40, country, alternative, rock, songs from TV, films and musicals, and Christmas tunes. There’s even French, Greek, Jewish and Spanish choices. Devlin said youth gravitate toward Hannah Montana tunes, while mature clients adore the classics from the 1950s and ’60s. For everyone else in between, music choices vary, he said. One time, Devlin heard “The Star-Spangled Banner” playing in one room. When he peered in the door’s window, he saw everyone standing up with their hand on their hearts, he said.

The group I went with found some of the best karaoke fare to be songs from the 1970s and ’80s — anything from David Bowie’s “Life On Mars?” to Gloria Estefan’s “Turn the Beat Around” to Rick James’ “Super Freak.” We sung them all. It seems like no karaoke night can be complete without singing Garth Brooks’ “Friends In Low Places” and ABBA’s “Dancing Queen.” We did those, too, for good measure.

On the night I went, my friends and I had a blast ad-libbing and talking to the “audience” during songs as if we were actual performers giving a private concert. Maybe we should take our show on the road. Or just invite a few more friends out to Kroaky’s and get a bigger room — the one with the stage.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

No 1 for Nightlife in Sarasota with six five-star reviews

“Had a blast at Kroaky's”

Went to Sarasota with my family in July. We wanted to sing Karaoke in a smoke free enviroment and found Kroakhy's. We went on Sat. night, then back again on Tuesday night. We had a blast. My 92 year young dad sang 4 songs. Doesnt get much better than that. And much thanks to DJ Wade. He was awesome, great voice too.

“Great Place for the superstar in all of us”

Great place. One of my high lights on my trip to Florida. Very helpful and friendly! Can't wait to move down there so I can become a Kroaky regular and make good use of what I renamed in the room "The Kroaky Phone". Lol

“This place makes everyone sound like a rockstar!”

You've never had such a good time as singing here. The lounge has an amazing sound system and can accomodate a large crowd, yet feel intimate. Soo much fun when people sing along or dance . . .

Rooms are available for your private groups too. and they got like 11 of em'!

“WONDERFUL FUN!”

I went for the 1st time with my friends for my birthday and we had a blast! It was my 1st karaoke experience and it was one to remember. This year I went again for my birthday and then just rented out the lounge to host a baby shower for my sister. The service and wait staff was just on the money. I live in North Port so I actually have to drive for about an hour to get there, but again for the family or adult fun you are looking for its so worth it. The private rooms are great for small parties and you get to sing as much as you want, although I just eother rent or play in the lounge area. Cool thins is you can go into the lounge and sing as much as you want for free! The prices on the food and drink are very reasonable as well, and the food is pretty good. The thin crust pizza is the BEST!

“Kroaky's is my "happy place"!”

I try to make it to Kroaky's at least once every 3 or 4 months. It's my "happy place." While they do have a public karaoke lounge, I like the private karaoke rooms. I've been in the huge room for a friend's birthday party with 25 people, and I've been in the smallest room with 3 other friends, and most of the rooms in between. The rooms are comfortable and well air-conditioned. The staff is incredibly helpful - they come running when called, whether to take another drink or food order, or to change a battery on a dead mic, or to help us find the long song list that we just somehow lost.

The song list is ridiculously extensive, and it gets updated often. Kroaky's even has some "starter lists" to get the party moving. There's something incredibly therapeutic about singing with family or good friends for a couple of hours!

This place was sooooo much fun! There are many seperate rooms and you and your group will get your own private room with microphones and loud speakers, where you can sing and dance to your hearts desire! They also serve beer, wine and various appetizers, but we had none. My boyfriend and I went on a short weekend trip to Sarasota and that night was the most fun we had, not only in Sarasota, but in a long time. We were so preoccupied with singing, laughing, taping eachothers crazy performances that we didnt even think to order any food and we dont drink beer or wine. But trust me, you wont even need it! The only thing that I would recommend is a larger variety of songs in the R&B and possibly Hip-Hop genre, but other than that....it was awesome! I am positive that anyone could have a wonderful time at Kroakys!

We had a blast!

So much fun! 5 of us rented a suite, ordered some beer and snacks, and jumped right in to the fun! After a few "icebreakers" soon everybody was singing along at the top of our lungs. When you're with friends, you don't need to be self-conscious about your singing. If you hit a bad note, who cares!? The staff was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. The suites are very cool. We'll definitely be going back.

GREAT TIME!
The best place to go in Sarasota....by far!

It is so weird that no one else has written a review about Kroaky's because this place is so awesome and it always crowded on the weekends.   I guess that young folks in Sarasota do not use Yelp or a computer for that matter.  Oh well...

Anyways, we come here almost every two weeks and have a blast.  Whether you are with two people or 8 people it is a great place to have a good time, and a great alternative to going to a club or bar.  The rooms are immaculate and the staff is so friendly.  I am trying to get my friends from Tampa to come down and try this place, because it is definitely worth the drive for three hours of singing fun.

They just recently added some more songs to their lists and are willing and open to any suggestions.  They still do not serve mixed drinks, but they have beer and wine.  Liquor license are expensive, so that might be the reason for that.

I have been to New York City and Atlanta, even in large Asian communities, and have never experienced a Karaoke club this nice before. You are really missing out if you don't give this place a try.
